K is for . . . Klondike Bar

Everyone should have
some private indulgence,
a bite into chocolate,
sweet as sin, dark, far easier
to surrender, eyes closed,
to those tastes that distract and delight,
hot and cold,
than to pitch my book
or stand in front of strangers
and read aloud. I'd rather be
eating ice cream, out on the back porch,
watching green leaves unfurl
on the tall willow tree.
Wouldn't you?

Today, I'll be rolling downtown here in Spokane to read a bit from one of my books. I thought I was looking forward to this reading, but why did I wake up thinking of ice cream, my go-to comfort food? My favorite? Dreyers's Grand, chocolate with peanut butter clusters. Too bad it melts. I've put it aside for a time, more interested in calories and health than sweets. Actually, I haven't eaten ice cream for several months now, but I still remember the taste. It seems funny to be thinking of ice cream at 6 am, but that's what came along with the letter "K" for the A to Z Challenge.

  1. That is my mother's ultimate favorite ice cream ever! She's 997 years old and resides in an Assisted Living Facility a few miles from me. Even though Dementia has completely moved in with her, on warm summer evenings after dinner we sit on the porch, feel the heat from the setting sun, and I feel her a Klondike bar from a bowl. Good times..... Thanks

    1. I'm glad my little poem connected with such good memories of your mother. Klondike bars are the last resort!

  2. My mother loves ice cream, as do her brothers. I prefer cake and cookies, like my dad did. Tea and cake--the perfect afternoon indulgence!

Of course, on a hot summer day a hot fudge sundae is sublime. A real treat.

    1. Did someone say hot fudge sundae? I guess I wasn't thinking that clearly at 6 am. Thanks for the smile. I would settle for tea and cake -- IF ice cream were not available. :)

Interesting how the mind takes us to places where we feel comforted and get the strength to carry on. Hope the thought of ice cream was enough to get you through your day!

Everybody needs some comfort food! I'm not sure if I'd like Klondike bars; I prefer my chocolate paired with something REALLY sweet, like in Caramilk bars, or my favorite, Cadbury Easter creme eggs! I was just doing an egg count this morning to see how long my stock will last me. ;)
