IWSG: About those themes . . . and Veteran's Day

This month's question for IWSG resonates for me: As a writer, do you have favorite themes that you like to explore in your stories? If so, what are they?

My stories tend to always ask how do we overcome seemingly impossible challenges? How do we make moral choices, despite high risks? If we do make a wrong choice, what steps are we willing to take to preserve or reclaim our integrity?

I'm learning slowly that this theme comes from my childhood. It's far too late to correct what happened so long ago or to confront those involved, but I am grateful for each day, for the loving family I'm blessed with, and for the promise of tomorrow.

Now, about Veteran's Day. My husband protested against the war in Vietnam, yet he served in combat when he was drafted. He saw his best friend killed. When he returned home, he suffered through family celebrations, then left to travel the world. He stopped to visit friends in San Francisco and met me there. He told me that he really liked me, but that he was traveling, not sure when he was going to settle down. I responded, "I like to travel too." That was some 52 years ago. We have traveled. If either one suggests going somewhere, the other one gets out the suitcases.

These days, our travels have slowed down a bit, but that curiosity, the intriguing call of wonder about what lies around the next corner, shows up in my stories as well. In fact, my latest story, Honeymoon in Egypt, was inspired by a month-long indie travel in Egypt.
