My favorite book on editing is Elizabeth Lyon's Manuscript Makeover (it has checklists organized by chapter). I agree that NaNoWriMo is a big help in getting jump-started or just generating that first draft. May your writing go well! It was a good exercise in learning just how hard writing is. I admire authors who go through the writing process. Perhaps first novels belong in drawers.
